Can hypnotherapy help me lose weight?
Do you want to lose weight? You’re not alone.
You won’t be surprised to learn that “How to lose weight” is one of the most popular phrases typed into Google, with millions of people going online every day to find new methods to help shed pounds.
Whether you’ve over-eaten over Christmas, have set a new year’s resolution to trim down or you’ve just had enough of being overweight, when it comes to losing weight there’s never a better time than the present.
Perhaps you’ve tried dieting in the past and found it doesn’t work for you. That’s understandable. One of the biggest issues with dieting is that it rarely takes away the craving for food which is at the root of many of our issues.
In this blog, we will look at another way of losing weight: by using hypnotherapy.
Does hypnotherapy work for weight loss?
As a hypnotherapist, I’m regularly asked if hypnotherapy actually works as a method for losing weight.
It does. But I would say that, wouldn’t I? So if you’re the sceptical type, consider the following.
According to the medical study “Effects of Hypnotherapy on Weight Loss and thus on Serum Leptin, Adiponectin, and Irisin Levels in Obese Patients”, “hypnotherapy in obesity treatment leads to weight loss in obese patients… it is easy to apply, cheap, and effective; has no potential for side effects; and can be applied both alone and in combination with other treatments.”
Another medical study, “The effectiveness of hypnosis as an intervention for obesity: A meta-analytic review”, concluded: “Hypnosis is very effective in producing weight loss over a relatively short span of time… Clinicians should view hypnosis as a promising treatment option for obesity, especially when used in conjunction with CBT techniques for weight loss.”
How does hypnotherapy work for weight loss?
Clearly, losing weight is all about eating. No hypnotherapist can reduce the number of calories in chocolate or whatever your favourite snack might be.
The way hypnotherapy works with losing weight is by helping people change their thinking. You won’t walk out of a hypnotherapy session with me 12 pounds lighter, but you will have started changing your mindset so that you stop eating the way you did before.
I will get you thinking differently. It doesn’t have to be through “suggestion therapy” (e.g. seeing chocolate bars as cold, wet piece of cardboard that you absolutely don’t want to eat!); you might be better served by helping you believe that you can lose weight, and by focusing on every positive in a way that you perhaps didn’t before.
Will hypnotherapy work to help me lose weight?
Hypnotherapy will help you lose weight. But only if you embrace it wholeheartedly.
Not only do you need to believe you can lose weight, but you need to be open-minded to the suggestions that your hypnotherapist makes. You will also need to be ready to make changes to your lifestyle, such as doing more exercise.
Also, you may well relapse at some point. It happens and it’s not unusual. However, you need to view your relapse as just that. It’s a dip in the road, not the end of the road completely.
Are there any reasons not to use hypnotherapy for weight loss?
Hypnotherapy is a very effective tool for losing weight, but it’s important to remember that it’s not appropriate for everyone – anybody with a history of psychosis or eating disorders, for example.
Naturally, you can trust me to take your treatment very seriously. We won’t proceed unless I am certain that it is safe to do so.
How long does it take? And how much does it cost?
That’s an ‘how long is a piece of string’ question, unfortunately.
